Clockwise from upper-left: the soccer field, community gardens,
baseball field, and tennis courts of Octagon Park.
Metropolitan Hospital operated on the island between 1894 and 1955. (More later on Metropolitan.) The site of Octagon Park once contained many buildings associated with Metropolitan. Among them was the charming Roman Catholic Chapel of the Sacred Heart, above, opened in 1913. Heavy vandalism forced the chapel’s demolition in 1978. The baseball field now sits in its place.
